Fit Together was formed in 2011 through a collaborative effort between Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Northwestern Connecticut YMCA and United Way of Northwest Connecticut, after the Y was awarded a Pioneering Healthier Communities grant to help fight childhood obesity. After gathering community data, Fit Together’s initial focus is to identify policy changes and environmental improvements in the cities of Torrington and Winsted that will help make the healthy choice the easy choice.
In October 2012 Mark Fenton, national public health, planning, and transportation consultant, spent some time in Torrington and Winsted. Mark specializes in personal, boots-on-the-ground evaluation of local communities’ infrastructure to show how to actively construct healthier places to live, work and play. He is a vibrant, engaging, thought provoking speaker whose past presentations have ignited exciting changes in many localities. For more information visit his website: http:// www.markfenton.com/.
While visiting our towns Mark conducted community assessments and hosted a walking tour & workshop to discuss issues and brainstorm a plan of action. In addition, Mark lead a breakfast economic development conversation to introduce the identified action steps to the community & business leaders of Torrington and Winsted, who will best be able to ensure the implementation.
